The core loop in one pass
Wanderburg is a single-player action roguelike where you control a giant medieval fortress on wheels. The basic work of a run is to drive around the map, destroy or consume weaker targets, collect resources, choose targets, steer around danger and use the fortress’s mounted tools and active abilities from the right position.
Growth comes from moving forward and consuming the world around you. Fleeing villages, wandering flocks and smaller fortresses feed the castle, while powerful enemy castles are the targets that push evolution further. The castle does not merely receive upgrades; it can physically expand as the run progresses.
The controls may be simple, but the actual piloting workload has several parts at once: steer the fortress, dodge attacks, manage boost, choose the next target and trigger active abilities at the right time. Because mounted weapons depend on position, moving the castle is part of combat rather than just travel.

A beginner’s first-run sequence
- Start with weaker targets. Small troops and villages function as food for the fortress, and villages, flocks and smaller fortresses all contribute to growth.
- Collect resources and take upgrades or modules that give the fortress a clearer combat role before you challenge the enemies capable of ending the run.
- Keep steering and weapon orientation connected. Mounted weapons sit on different parts of the fortress, and turning takes time, so position the castle before relying on a particular attack.
- Use boost as a managed resource while dodging attacks and choosing targets. Trigger active abilities at the moment they best support the current engagement.
- Challenge larger enemy fortresses when the run is ready for them. They can completely destroy you, but defeating stronger enemies is also how the fortress can grow physically larger and gain more health.
- When arrows, enemy armies and multiple large castles crowd the fight, prioritize staying positioned and avoiding incoming pressure. Stronger fortresses can end the run outright.
